The Power Struggle Over CNN Highlights The Extent to Which Flawed American Media Now Is.

On Thursday evening, as rumors swirled concerning an incident at Brown University, the network's Kaitlan Collins used social media, noting the confusion and guiding the public to her channel's 9pm newscast.

While it is by no means a flawless news source, her statement resonated to many. It stands as one of the broadcasters where you can find reality-based and generally reliable reporting – especially during crises such as the one developing in the vicinity of a New Hampshire storage facility.

A Precarious Position During a Business Struggle

But the news network, now middle-aged, finds itself in a precarious position as two massive media empires vie for ownership of its parent company, Warner Bros Discovery.

Whatever the outcome, the future of CNN has become part of a high-stakes game of corporate ownership, not as a question of what helps the information-seeking public.

“Here is one more case of the fundamental flaws with origins in decades of regulatory actions,” said Victor Pickard, writer of “Democracy Without Journalism?” and a professor of media policy at the Pennsylvania University.

The conjecture about who will own Warner Bros Discovery – will it be Netflix or Paramount Skydance? – overlooks a larger point.

“It gets presented as a corporate drama with influential figures as the central actors, but there is scant discussion of the societal benefit,” Pickard added.

The Complicating Element: Political Influence

This situation is complicated by Donald Trump’s views about a network he has frequently denounced as perhaps his main “fake news” foe.

Recall the shouts of “CNN sucks!” at Trump's rallies, his team's disciplinary revocation of reporter Jim Acosta’s press credentials, or his tense exchanges with Collins in official meetings.

Trump now asserts that the network requires new ownership. This can be interpreted as ownership that will protect him from negative coverage and examination. That is part of why he seems to favor Paramount Skydance, which has made a hostile bid.

There is a basis to like that company more. For one thing, it is controlled by David Ellison, son of the pro-Trump Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people.

The company, owner of CBS News, also recently appointed the conservative Bari Weiss, known for her “anti-woke” beliefs, as the top editor of that historic news network.

A Possibility of Continued Instability

Notably, if Netflix is successful, CNN and other cable outlets would first be separated into a standalone company. This might be a relief to many at the network, but it’s hardly a secure position. That structure could position CNN for another sale. There is no finish line.

In the view of Timothy Wu, a lot of this is a violation of antitrust statutes, anyway. The well-known analyst of big tech’s dominance recently argued that anti-trust laws should block both deals.

“Each proposed deal would be bad for the country, and both should be challenged by regulators,” Wu stated.

The Bigger Problem and a Path Forward

Regardless of the resolution in this situation, the larger issue persists.

“Our current system is a highly system hostile to democracy, but we ought not succumb to learned helplessness,” Pickard said. Policy decisions – from the 1930s and 1940s – helped to create this overly commercial monster, and revised policy decisions can address it.

Can reform occur in an era where the Federal Communications Commission chair will not confirm that the agency is independent? Change is very unlikely now, but that doesn’t mean it will be impossible forever.

Policies that strengthen independent news organizations, reinforce local journalism, fund public media, and prevent the consolidation of media power in a handful of hands are not only possible – they are vital for a healthy democracy.

Regarding media ownership, bigger isn’t better. And news organizations like CNN shouldn’t be pieces in the most recent merger game.
